Deepest Hole In The World - The Kola Superdeep Borehole
Updated July 23, 2019
The deepest hole in the world created by man is the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia.
In 1970, Soviet geologists started a giant project - to drill as deep as they could. Thirteen years later they had reached 12,261 m (40,236 ft) into Earth's crust,[1] where a temperature of 180 ºC (356 ºF) forced them to stop drilling.[2][3] The whole project was later cancelled and the drill site, 20 km (12 miles) from Norway, is now abandoned. Others have tried drilling deeper, but the Kola Superdeep Borehole, also called SG-3, is still the deepest hole in the world created by man.[3]
A concrete tower on the tundra enclosed the drill that made the deepest hole in the world. The photo was taken in 2007.
The tower is gone today, and the other buildings on the site are derelict.
